Caching#
- Existing packages:
Cache-Control: public, max-age=300— a new version shows up within five minutes (GitHub's image proxy may cache a little longer). - Unknown, hidden or private packages: a grey not found badge with HTTP status 404, cached for one minute, so a freshly published package appears quickly.
- The badge endpoint is not rate limited, because GitHub fetches all README images through a few shared proxy IPs.
Badge views are counted (without cookies or IP addresses) as badge_view events — see
Analytics & privacy.
